Are Malls Making a Comeback? Reinvention Is Driving Retail’s Next Era

The mall wasn't just a place to buy things. It was a place to see people.

Let me explain.

I recently read an article about how malls are making a comeback with Gen Z. Retail experts are calling them "third places" and talking about experience-driven retail, entertainment, and social gathering spaces.

As I was reading it, I couldn't help but laugh.

They're describing my teenage years.

Back then, we didn't go to the mall because we needed something. We went because that's where everyone was.

You met your friends. You grabbed food at the food court. You played arcade games. You people-watched. You walked around stores you couldn't afford and somehow stayed busy for hours.

One of my favorite memories is when my friend accidentally left her retainer on an arcade game at Aladdin's Castle and didn't realize it until she got home. Her parents drove her back to the mall to look for it. If memory serves me correctly, there may have even been a search through the garbage cans involved.

I also worked at the earring kiosk in the mall. It was one of the best places in town to watch life happen. You saw everybody. You learned the latest news. You caught up with friends. You watched first dates, families shopping, teenagers hanging out, and people simply enjoying being around other people.

The mall wasn't just a place to buy things.

It was a place to see people.

Which brings me to my idea.

Maybe it's time for Hollywood and Netflix to step in and save the dying mall.

Not with another superhero movie. Not with another reality show.

Give us a mall series.

The friendships. The drama. The gossip. The romances. The everyday stories.

Because if Gen Z is rediscovering the mall, maybe the rest of us are remembering something too.

We don't just miss the stores.

We miss the people.

Hollywood. Netflix.

Make malls cool again.

Let's go.
