MILTON

Affordable housing, communication with the public and the impact of city growth and development on taxpayers were key issues discussed Tuesday night at a forum for Milton Common Council candidates, hosted by the Rock County Civics Academy.

Incumbent Eric Stockman and challenger Kennith Smith attended. Incumbent Ryan Holbrook was absent.

Smith said updating the city's zoning code and comprehensive plan are important, as is bringing more affordable housing to Milton.

Stockman said the fire station may need to be expanded soon and it will be up to the council to find a way to do that that's affordable for local taxpayers. He also said meetings should be open when possible and said istening sessions with the public are also important.

Smith said if elected he'll be out talking to people, which gets the city and citizens growing together.

Stockman said he wants to look into affordable housing, including the current availability and cost. He said affordable housing is not just a Milton problem, it's a county problem, and a nationwide problem. He said Milton is growing and is going to need to maintain its growth but also make sure growth doesn’t negatively impact taxpayers.

Smith said the city needs housing that brings new people in and gets them to stay in Milton. He said there is also room for more hotels.
