JANESVILLE

The Janesville City Council has voted to annex 132 acres from the town of Rock, just south of a Dollar General distribution center at 101 Innovation Dr. and east of SHINE Technologies, 3400 Innovation Court.

The site could become, by 2024, a new tax incremental finance district located in an existing south-side industrial park.

The city council also voted Monday night to rezone the site at 4000 S. County Road G for light manufacturing use. The land is currently undeveloped and zoned for farmland preservation.

Duane Cherek, the city’s planning director, said the vision is to extend city utilities to the site and to then market it to potential developers. He said it will likely take until next year to set up the TIF district.

The city additionally has an option to purchase 267 acres directly south of the site approved for annexation Monday night. City officials said a future TIF district could be expanded to incorporate that land, as well.

City officials said Monday night’s annexation vote and future planned TIF district will advance the city’s economic development efforts on the south side.Cherek specifically said the annexation will spur the extension of public improvements and subsequent industrial expansion and development.
