BELOIT

Homecare Pharmacy, the last independently owned pharmacy in Beloit, has closed its doors after more than 30 years of business.

“The decision to close the store was difficult, prompted by factors such as changing market dynamics and evolving customer preferences,” a letter from the pharmacy stated. “The management and staff of Homecare Pharmacy would like to take this opportunity to express their heartfelt gratitude to the community for their unwavering support throughout the years.”

Homecare Pharmacy, at 1006 Woodard Ave., was an integral part of the community for about 36 years. It was owned by Frank McNamara and his son, Joe McNamara, and after Frank retired, the business was co-owned by Joe McNamara and Pharmacist Steve Nilson.

Nilson joined the business in 1986. He retired in 2021 and Joe McNamara’s son, Evan McNamara, became the pharmacist at the Beloit business. Evan McNamara was familiar with the family business, having started work at the store at the age of 16 as a grocery clerk.

In 2021, Homecare Pharmacy sold its medical equipment division to Integrated Homecare Services. The service provides medical equipment rental and supplies.

“We are immensely grateful to the community for embracing and supporting us,” the letter from Homecare Pharmacy stated. “Your patronage has allowed us to grow and thrive, creating employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy. We have cherished every interaction, conversation, and smile shared within these walls.”

A sign on the pharmacy door stated that clients can get assistance with filling prescriptions at Walgreens locations in the Beloit area.
