MILTON

After 20 years of being in the restaurant industry, the Ramirez Torres family recently opened up their own restaurant, Mary’s Cafe, in downtown Milton at 100 Front St.

Jose Ramirez Torres was working the front house of a Beloit restaurant alongside his mother Maribel Torres Torres, when one of their coworkers mentioned a vacant building in Milton that would be the perfect spot for their family to take over.

As a Beloit resident, Ramirez Torres had not heard about Milton before this.

“Milton is a hidden gem,” Ramirez Torres said. “It reminds me of the small towns my family and I used to live in such as Tomahawk and Evansville. We’re excited to be residents here one day!”

The 20-year-old cherishes customer service and community connections, so running the front of the house with his mother is a perfect fit. His father Jose Ramirez Ramos loves to cook, so he runs the kitchen.

The cafe is open everyday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., except for Friday when the hours extend to 8 p.m.

“Everyone from our family has worked in the restaurant industry and opening up our own restaurant has brought comfort and happiness to us,” Ramirez Ramos and Torres Torres said. “We all love doing what’s needed to keep this business running.”

The owner of the Sign Guy in Cambridge Tim Ross, did all of the signs for the cafe and is also a frequent customer.

“The restaurant is fantastic, it’s the best food around!” Ross said. He recommends the huevos rancheros, a Mexican egg dish served with avocados, one of the restaurant’s main ingredients.

“The food is high quality and is presented beautifully,” Ross said. “The food looks attractive and high end, even though it’s a regular diner.”

The family takes pride in serving fresh ingredients to their customers, whom they’ve called a very uniting and supportive community.

“The family is so friendly and accommodating. They’ve become good friends in a very short period of time,” Ross said.

Julie Perry is another customer who went to the cafe for the first time last Saturday.

“The food is excellent and it’s nice to see so many healthy options,” Perry said. She also agrees that the staff is friendly and provides great service. “We will be back!”

Ramirez Torres hopes to run the restaurant himself when his parents retire. He believes they found the perfect community to be in.

“I really enjoy making conversation with the customers. We’re really happy to be at this location, and everyone has made us feel welcome,” he said.

Ramirez Ramos and Torres Torres hope to attract more people to Milton.

“Our favorite part about Milton is the people and the unity of the town,” they said. “We’re so comfortable and happy here!”
