JANESVILLE

A Pizza Hut restaurant on West Court Street in Janesville will be demolished and replaced with an updated restaurant with a drive-thru.

It will remain a Pizza Hut. The Janesville City Council voted Monday night, on the recommendation of the city’s Plan Commission, to move ahead with the project, approving a certified survey map.

The Pizza Hut on West Court street is currently 2,800 square-feet. The new building would be smaller, about 1,800 square feet.

Brain Schweigl, a senior planner with the city’s Public Works Division, said the existing building is an older model of the restaurant and has a full dining room, with a drive thru that now sees limited use.

He said the new restaurant would primarily offer carryout and drive-through orders. It will resemble a Pizza Hut on Milton Avenue that was renovated in 2017.

According to a memorandum submitted to the Plan Commission on Aug.7, the new restaurant will have a single lane drive-thru located along the east side of the building, for customers who have ordered ahead either online or by phone.

The drive-thru lane is of sufficient length to accommodate up to seven queued vehicles at a time.

Schweigl said he couldn’t offer information on when the construction would start but he said he would assume “not too soon after the city council approves the final survey map.”

Property manager Danny Senf said construction is set to start by Sept. 1 and depending on the weather the new building could open by the end of the year or next spring at the latest.

Senf said that the current Pizza Hut will remain in business until the new building is fully operational. Then, demolition will begin on the older building.

Senf said the existing building is about 50 years old.
